Step One Take an hour, and think about what your website offers. Make a list. Be general and specific. Let's say you sell art prints. Not only do you offer prints, but these are great gifts, anniversary, father's day, holiday gifts, they are also wonderful home decorations, or office decorations. You are also maybe representing different artists.

Step Two Pretend that you are looking for the things that your website offers. What phrases would you type into a search engine to find them? Write these down. These are your keyword phrases. For example: "art prints, landscape prints, certain artist, anniversary gift, office art..."
|
Step Three To better expand your keywords, go to wordtracker.com and click on their free trial in the left hand column. Type in one of your search phrases. They will come up with alternatives. Some may reflect your site, some may not. Choose from what they come up with and add them to your list. or try these sites: http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Step Four From this list that you've compiled in step two and three, put together a list of relevant search phrases for each page of your website. Make up a title for the page, and use some of these search words in the tile. Come up with a short, enticing description of each page, once again using some of the search phrases. Make sure the text copy on your page has some of your search phrases in it.
